Poppies: Wales have decided against following England and Scotland in defying FIFA by wearing poppies on their shirts or armbands in tomorrow’s World Cup qualifier against Serbia. The Football Association of Wales (FAW) said in a statement   that world soccer’s governing body had refused a request for players to wear poppies in commemoration of the armistice that ended World War One.

Coman: Kingsley Coman has been ruled out injured of France’s World Cup qualifier against Sweden at the Stade de France today and was replaced in the squad by Thomas Lemar, the French federation (FFF) said yesterday. Bayern Munich forward Coman injured his ankle and knee in Wednesday’s training session, the FFF said in a statement.

Horn: Cologne goalkeeper Timo Horn is likely to miss the rest of 2016 after undergoing surgery on an injured knee. The 23-year-old, who has been a pillar of the club’s rise to sixth in the Bundesliga standings, conceding just seven goals in nine appearances, injured his right knee in training on Wednesday.

Netherlands: Netherlands have added midfielders Leroy Fer and the uncapped Marten de Roon to their squad for Sunday’s World Cup qualifier in Luxembourg after three players were injured in a friendly with Belgium. Striker Vincent Janssen, winger Jeremain Lens and midfielder Stijn Schaars all limped off during Wednesday’s 1-1 warm-up draw in Amsterdam, triggering the late call-ups.

Sherwood: Former Tottenham manager Tim Sherwood has been appointed director of football at Swindon. The ex-Aston Villa boss had been linked with the manager’s job at QPR but has instead moved to the League One side and was presented to the media yesterday. The 47-year-old played with Robins chairman Lee Power at Norwich and had previously helped send players to the County Ground on loan while at Tottenham.

Barton:  Joey Barton’s tumultuous spell at Rangers was ended yesterday as the club announced they had terminated the midfielder’s contract with immediate effect. The 34-year-old Englishman, who joined Rangers on a two-year contract in May, returned to the Scottish Premiership club last week after a six-week suspension.
