Belotti: Italy forward Andrea Belotti will miss their opening World Cup qualifier against Israel in Haifa today after picking up a thigh injury. Belotti, 22, was one of several new faces called up for coach Giampiero Ventura’s first squad. He has now returned to his club Torino after picking up a ‘light muscle injury’.
Wright-Phillips: Bradley Wright-Phillips’s goal earned New York Red Bulls a 1-0 victory over Vancouver Whitecaps. The 31-year-old Englishman coolly slotted home on 50 minutes for his 17th goal of the 2016 MLS season, moving him level with New York City captain David Villa in the race for the golden boot.
Biglia: Lucas Biglia is set to extend his contract at Lazio until 2021, reports in Italy said yesterday. The Argentina international will get €3m per year according to his new agreement with the current contract expiring in the summer of 2018. Biglia, 30, was appointed captain at Lazio last year as the Olympic Stadium outfit turned down big-money offers from Juventus and Inter to part with their midfielder in the transfer window just ended.
Nenè dies: Brazilian Claudio Olinto de Carvalho, better known as Nenè, died last weekend, aged 74. Nenè played a key role for Cagliari when they won the Serie A title back in 1970. In all, he figured in 311 matches in the Cagliari shirt and scored 23 goals.
