Schmeichel: Leicester City goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel has signed a new five-year deal with the Premier League champions. The 29-year-old Dane was instrumental in the Foxes title tilt last season and is staying put after putting pen to paper on an improved contract.
New York: New York City FC extended their lead at the top of the Eastern Conference of the MLS to three points after holding San Jose Earthquakes to a 0-0 draw. Patrick Vieira’s men were fresh from a 5-1 thumping of Colorado Rapids last week but had goalkeeper Josh Saunders to thank for helping them to a point. The keeper produced a string of impressive saves, while Earthquakes striker Chris Wondolowski hit the post in the second half as they were denied.
Stoke: Stoke have announced the signing of AFC Wimbledon defender Ryan Sweeney for an undisclosed fee. The 19-year-old, who came through the Dons’ academy, has penned a three-year deal with Mark Hughes’ side. Central defender Sweeney made 10 appearances for Wimbledon last term as they won promotion to Sky Bet League One via the play-offs.
Kilmarnock: Kilmarnock have rejected Charlton’s offer for Josh Magennis, manager Lee Clark revealed. The League One club tabled a £100,000 bid for Magennis on Friday, double that of Oldham’s failed attempt earlier in the week, and the Northern Ireland international was absent as Kilmarnock suffered a 2-1 home defeat to Motherwell in their opening Ladbrokes Premiership fixture. But Clark said after the match that Magennis was going nowhere.
Evans: Ched Evans scored on his Chesterfield debut as the Spireites opened their Sky Bet League One campaign with a 1-1 draw at Oxford. The Welshman, returning to the game this season, struck from a long-range free-kick in the 76th minute to cancel out Wes Thomas’ first-half opener at the Kassam Stadium.
