Evans: Ched Evans has been offered the chance of a return to football by League One club Chesterfield. The Welsh forward, 27, has signed a 12-month contract with the Spireites, the club have said. Evans will go on trial on October 4 charged with raping a woman in May 2011. He has pleaded not guilty.

Crowd trouble: UEFA has opened disciplinary proceedings against Albania and Romania after their fans caused trouble in their Group A game at Euro 2016 on Sunday. UEFA said that both federations were facing charges for “setting off fireworks” and the “throwing of objects” at Lyon’s Parc OL. Albania faced additional charges for “field invasion”, a UEFA statement added.

Mansford: Leeds United have appointed Ben Mansford as the Championship club’s new chief executive. Mansford has quit newly-promoted Yorkshire rivals Barnsley, where he worked as chief executive for three years, to oversee football operations under Leeds chairman Massimo Cellino. “Leeds is a city I know well and throughout my career in football I’ve experienced the atmosphere at Elland Road and the fantastic supporters the club has,” Mansford said.

Renshaw: Everton have signed Oldham youth team goalkeeper Chris Renshaw on a three-year contract. The 18-year-old, who had been with the Latics from the age of 11, without making a competitive appearance for them, will go into the Toffees’ Under-21 squad. “This is a step up but I’m looking forward to it,” Renshaw said.

Grella: Mike Grella’s double earned New York Red Bulls a 2-0 win over Seattle Sounders to take them back above neighbours New York City into second place in Major League Soccer’s Eastern Conference. The former Leeds forward pounced for the opener in the 18th minute after Sacha Kljestan hit a post, and killed the game off with a second just before the hour.

Russian hooligan: French police re-arrested Russian soccer fan leader Alexander Shprygin in the southwestern city of Toulouse yesterday, two days after deporting him in connection with violence that marred the beginning of the Euro 2016 tournament. It was not immediately clear how Shprygin re-entered France. A message on his Twitter handle said that he had taken an unconventional route and included a photo of a jet belonging to Spanish low-cost carrier Vueling Airlines.
