Own goal: A comical own goal by Feyenoord’s Sven van Beek, one of several in the Dutch league yesterday, saw the title challengers slip to a 1-0 defeat at struggling ADO Den Haag. Van Beek attempted a routine volley to clear a headed ball that looped towards him but, under no pressure, instead guided the ball into the net for the only goal after 69 minutes. Feyenoord stay second on 25 points, three behind Ajax.

Rangers lose: Paul Hanlon’s winner killed off Rangers manager Mark Warburton’s 100 per cent Championship record and lifted Hibernian back into the race for automatic promotion. Rangers were looking to extend their 11-match unbeaten run but it was Alan Stubbs’s men who claimed a crucial 2-1 win at Easter Road. Jason Cummings had fired his team in front but Rangers equalised just after half-time when Lee Wallace’s strike was deflected home by Darren McGregor.

Sacked: Como have parted ways with coach Carlo Sabatini as Saturday’s 1-1 draw at home to Modena left the club rooted to the bottom of the Serie B standings. Como only managed seven points from 11 matches and at present they’re trailing three points behind Ascoli, Lanciano and Ternana. Sabatini said: “I could not have done more. I accept the decision of the club, as unfortunately the table speaks clearly. When you’re in last place, it’s a normal reaction.”

Stuttgart: Struggling Stuttgart edged out Darmstadt 2-0 to continue their climb up the table with their second victory in three matches. Darmstadt full-back Gyorgi Garics headed the ball into his own net as he tried to clear a Christian Gentner cross in the 68th minute and Timo Werner added another in stoppage time as Darmstadt buckled under the hosts’ pressure in the second half. Stuttgart, the 2007 German champions, moved clear of the relegation zone for the first time this season, climbing into 14th place on 10 points.

Fedele out: Serie A strugglers Carpi will be without Matteo Fedele for the next four months after a serious knee injury, the club said yesterday. The Switzerland midfielder was injured during the midweek 2-1 upset to Frosinone. Carpi said tests had shown a lesion of the anterior collateral cruciate in Fedele’s left knee.
