Favre resigns: Borussia Moenchengladbach coach Lucien Favre resigned yesterday, a day after the Champions League club lost 1-0 at Cologne to make it five defeats in a row for their worst Bundesliga start ever. “After long thought and detailed analysis I have come to the conclusion that it is in this situation the best possible decision, to step down as head coach of Borussia Moenchengladbach,” the Swiss said in a personal statement.

Crowd trouble: The Ligue 1 game between Marseille and Lyon was interrupted last night after fans threw bottles on to the Stade Velodrome pitch. Referee Ruddy Buquet sent the players to the dressing rooms in the 62nd minute with Lyon leading 1-0 following Alexandre Lacazette’s first-half penalty. When the game resumed, Karim Rekik equalised for Marseille on 69 minutes.

Ajax: Anwar El Ghazi continued his red-hot scoring form in the Dutch league as he grabbed the opener in a 2-0 win for Ajax at Excelsior Rotterdam yesterday that put his club back at the top of the standings. El Ghazi’s effort just past the half-hour mark was followed by a strike from Polish international Arkadiusz Milik before half-time in a comfortable win. Ajax moved on to 16 points from their opening six matches of the season with El Ghazi’s goal tally now up to seven in the league.

Barcelona: Lionel Messi scored one penalty and missed another as his double helped Barcelona sweep Levante aside in the second half in a 4-1 victory to maintain their perfect La Liga start. Last season’s treble winners lead the standings with 12 points ahead of three teams, including arch-rivals Real Madrid, on 10.
