A-League: Awer Mabil scored three minutes from time to give Adelaide City a 2-1 win over Brisbane Roar in the first play-off match of the A-League post-season. Mabil, who migrated to Australia less than a decade ago from Africa, came off the bench and struck the winner in the 87th minute. The result sent Adelaide into the semi-finals, against Sydney FC, while knocking out Brisbane, the defending champions who had won three of the last four championships.

Granada: Granada have appointed Jose Ramon Sandoval as their coach until the end of the season. Sandoval, the former Rayo Vallecano and Sporting Gijon coach, succeeds Abel Resino, who was sacked in the wake of Thursday night’s 2-1 Primera Division home defeat to Espanyol. The Andalusian club are currently six points from safety with four games of the league season remaining after Resino’s brief reign.

Sawa in: Homare Sawa, Japan’s all-time leading scorer and most capped international, will play in a record sixth women’s World Cup after battling back from a year-long absence to make the squad for Canada. The 36-year-old, who was named player of the tournament and was also the leading scorer at the finals as Japan beat United States on penalties four years ago, was named in the 23-woman squad for the June 6-July 5 title defence.

Guidetti: Celtic striker John Guidetti has been found guilty and censured for singing an offensive song about the demise of traditional rivals Rangers. The 22-year Manchester City loanee was issued with a notice of complaint last month after giving an interview to Dutch TV show FC Rijnmond. After a delayed appearance before the Scottish FA’s disciplinary panel at Hampden, Guidetti was found in breach and censured.
