Diawara: Former Senegal defender Souleymane Diawara has been detained for violent conduct, a source within the Marseille prison where the Nice player is being held said yesterday. The 36-year-old Diawara has been held since Thursday because he “tried to exercise justice himself” after being the victim of a scam.

Sanchez In: Deportivo La Coruna have hired former player Victor Sanchez as coach to replace Victor Fernandez, who was sacked on Wednesday after a 1-1 home draw with Cordoba left them just above the La Liga relegation places. “There is no better opportunity or anything that I could have wanted more than begin this stage of my life as coach of Deportivo,” Sanchez said.

Scotland: Scotland will prepare for their crucial Euro 2016 qualifier against Ireland with a challenge match against Qatar at Easter Road on June 5. The 6-1 home victory against Gibraltar took Gordon Strachan’s side into third place in Group D, just behind second-placed Germany on goal difference, ahead of the visit to Dublin’s Aviva Stadium on June 13.

Garcia signs: Malaga forward Samuel Garcia has signed a three-year extension to his contract. Malaga were keen to tie Garcia to a long-term contract with Liverpool and Valencia reportedly keen to acquire the player’s services this summer.

Agger: Denmark and Brondby defender Daniel Agger has been banned for two games for violent conduct after elbowing Mattias Jorgensen in the head in a hotly-contested derby against FC Copenhagen on Monday. Match officials took no action during the game but the disciplinary committee of the Danish FA found Agger guilty having reviewed video footage of the incident.

Ronaldo: Real Madrid’s appeal against a yellow card shown to forward Cristiano Ronaldo in Wednesday’s 2-0 win at Rayo Vallecano has been granted by the Spanish soccer federation. The federation’s decision means Ronaldo can play in today’s game at home to Eibar. It was the Portugal captain’s fifth booking and would have resulted in a one-match suspension. Ronaldo was cautioned after the referee ruled he had dived to try to win a penalty.

The Championship: Brighton vs Bournemouth 0-2; Fulham vs Wigan Athletic 2-2.
