Gazzi: Torino veteran Alessandro Gazzi has signed a one-year contract extension, the Serie A club said yesterday. Gazzi, 32, was set to become a free agent next summer but it has now been announced that the former Bari player will stay at Torino for another season. This season he has made 17 league appearances for the Maroons.

McCarthy: Southampton have handed defender Jason McCarthy a new two-and-a-half-year deal. The 19-year-old made his professional debut in Saints’ 3-1 win at Crystal Palace on Boxing Day and has been involved in the first-team squad on a number of occasions. McCarthy, captain of the club’s Under-21s side, has been rewarded for that progress with a new deal which will keep him at St Mary’s until 2017.

Robinson: Motherwell have recruited Irish FA coach Steve Robinson as their new assistant manager. The 40-year-old has been working on Northern Ireland’s elite development programme following earlier stints as coach of the under-17s, under-19s and under-21s. The former Bournemouth and Luton midfielder, who won seven caps for Northern Ireland, will continue working with Michael O’Neill for the full national team.

A-League: Brisbane Roar’s resurgence continued as they downed Central Coast Mariners 2-0 away from home, yesterday. The reigning champions had won just three of their opening 13 matches this season, but they have now won their last three after seeing off the Mariners through second-half penalties from Jean Carlos Solorzano (51) and his replacement Andrija Kaluderovic (90). The result sees Brisbane climb above Melbourne City into sixth place, while Central Coast remain in the bottom three.

Gerarrd: Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard will be missing from the squad to face Crystal Palace in the fifth round of the FA Cup after being ruled out for two to three weeks with a hamstring problem. With Lucas Leiva already out for at least a month with a thigh problem it means Jordan Henderson and Joe Allen are likely to be paired in central midfield.
