Omitted: Paris SG forwards Ezequiel Lavezzi and Edinson Cavani have been left out of the squad for the third successive game after returning late from the mid-season break. Both players, who missed a training camp in Morocco, have been “reintegrated into collective training” but were not include them in the squad for today’s League Cup quarter-final at St Etienne.

Nastasic: Schalke 04 have signed Man. City defender Matija Nastasic on loan until the end of the season. The tall 21-year-old joined City as a teenager in 2012 on a five-year deal but has been unable to force his way into Manuel Pellegrini’s side. Nastasic has made just one appearance for City this season.

Charlton: Charlton have sacked head coach Bob Peeters following a poor run of results. The Addicks have not won since November 8 and Peeters has paid the price for a nine-game winless run which has left Charlton 14th in the Championship table. Peeters had heard calls for his head from the Charlton faithful during the 1-0 loss to Brighton on Saturday but the Belgian insisted his side were simply lacking luck. “If you don’t get the results I know people are not happy,” he said.

Olsson: Midfielder Kristoffer Olsson fractured his leg in his first training session with the Swedish national side, ruling him out of the team’s winter tour to Abu Dhabi. The 19-year-old looked to have twisted his right ankle but an X-ray yesterday disclosed the full extent of the damage.

Cahill: Tim Cahill will take over as Australia captain for their match at the Asian Cup. Australia coach Ange Poste-coglou said the 35-year-old striker would lead the side in today’s Group A clash with Oman after skipper Mile Jedinak was ruled out with an ankle injury.
