Adriano: A judge in Rio de Janeiro has dismissed charges that former Brazil striker Adriano was involved in drug trafficking. Prosecutors had alleged that the 32-year-old former Inter, Flamengo and Corinthians player bought a motorbike for a Rio drug trafficker to use in criminal activities in 2008. However, judge Maria Tereza Donatti said that there was not enough evidence to go to trial and closed the case.

Sydney lose: Nathan Burns scored the only goal of the game as Wellington Phoenix burst Western Sydney Wanderers’ bubble yesterday. The Wanderers won the AFC Champions League last week and have been rightly heralded for doing so, but were brought back down to earth by Nathan Burns’ 79th-minute winner in a 1-0 defeat.

Hector: Cologne defender Jonas Hector earned a surprise call-up for World Cup winners Germany’s Euro 2016 qualifier against Gibraltar and their friendly game against Spain later this month on the back of solid performances with the promoted club. Coach Joachim Loew also recalled fit-again Marco Reus, Sami Khedira, Benedikt Hoewedes and Lars Bender. The 24-year-old Hector has played every minute of every league game this season for Cologne.

Copa clash: Argentina’s arch rivals River Plate and Boca Juniors will meet in the Copa Sudamericana semi-finals after impressive wins in their respective quarter-final second legs on Thursday. River needed to come from behind to beat Estudiantes 3-2 at Monumental Stadium, which secured a 5-3 aggregate win. Boca, meanwhile, hammered Cerro Porteno 4-1 in Paraguay to advance 5-1 on aggregate. The other semi-final pits Brazil’s Sao Paulo against Atletico Nacional, of Colombia.
