Aguirre: Espanyol coach Javier Aguirre will leave at the end of the season when his contract expires after an indifferent campaign in which Barcelona’s second club flirted with relegation. Winless since the end of March, Espanyol are 12th with one game left, six points above the drop zone in a crowded lower half of the table. Espanyol president Joan Collet and Aguirre appeared at a news conference yesterday where they announced the former Mexico coach would be leaving by mutual consent.
Basel: Basel continued their dominance of Swiss football by winning their fifth successive league title with a 3-1 win away to Aarau on Thursday. The game ended in chaos when Basel fans staged a pitch invasion after the final whistle. TV pictures showed Basel fans clashing with riot police and throwing objects at the home fans, although the situation was quickly brought under control. The win gave Basel an unassailable four-point lead over Grasshoppers with one match to go.
Aalborg: Aalborg BK thumped FC Copenhagen 4-2 in the Danish cup final to complete the domestic double at the Parken Stadium on Thursday and round off a scintillating season. The victory ended a run of seven cup final defeats for Aalborg since their last victory in 1970.
Gosling: Former England Under-21 midfielder Dan Gosling is to join Championship side Bournemouth on a four-year deal, subject to a medical, after being released by Newcastle. Gosling, 24, has been told by manager Alan Pardew that his contract would not be renewed. Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe said: “He did very well on loan at Blackpool and ended the season in the team at Newcastle. That Premier League experience will be invaluable to us.”
League Two: Play-off SF, second leg – Fleetwood vs York 0-0 (Fleetwood win 1-0 on aggregate).
