Ozil: Mesut Ozil has apologised for failing to acknowledge fans after Arsenal’s 6-3 hammering at Manchester City. The German playmaker headed straight for the dressing room after the final whistle at the Etihad Stadium while his team-mates went over to applaud travelling supporters. In a statement on his website, www.mesutoezil.com, the 25-year-old said: “Sorry I didn’t thank the fans at the end of the game! You have been brilliant to me and I know you had travelled a long way and spent your money to support us.”

Ronaldo museum: Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo opened a museum in his honour in his birthplace yesterday, which he said had extra room for the Ballon d’Or and many other trophies to come. Standing next to his 2008 Ballon d’Or and 125 other individual and team awards dating back to his Madeira childhood, Ronaldo, 28, told reporters the CR7 Museum was a gift to his fans. “Of course it’s a special day,” the Portugal forward said. “I have room for more trophies.”

Roda: Coach Ruud Brood has been fired by Dutch club Roda JC Kerkrade in the wake of a six-match winless streak during which they have taken two points. “The disappointing results and the expectation that they will not improve in the short term have led to the decision,” a club statement said yesterday. Brood had been in charge at Roda from the start of last season when the club finished 16th. They are currently 14th but a single point above the relegation zone.

Murray: Wimbledon cham-pion Andy Murray, the first British winner of the men’s title for 77 years, was named BBC Sports Personality of the Year last night. The 26-year-old Scot, who was not at the awards ceremony in Leeds because he is training in Florida following a back injury, edged out Wales and British & Irish Lions rugby union full-back Leigh Halfpenny and jockey A.P. McCoy to win the award. Murray was presented with the trophy by nine-times Wimbledon champion Martina Navratilova.
