Butland: England goalkeeper Jack Butland joined second tier Barnsley on an emergency 93-day loan from Premier League Stoke City yesterday. Barnsley said the 20-year-old, who played for Birmingham last season and made his England senior debut in a friendly against Italy in 2012, would be in the squad for tomorrow’s match at Leicester.

Ajax: Ajax Amsterdam announced a profit of €18.2 million for the 2012/13 financial year yesterday, attributing it to the sale of leading players. It is a considerable increase on the profit of €8.5 million one year earlier and the club said in a statement they expected a larger profit in the next financial period particularly with participation in the Champions League and further player sales.

Sochaux: Sochaux coach Eric Hely, who said he would resign following Wednesday’s 5-1 defeat at Guingamp, has left the club who are bottom of Ligue 1. Sochaux, who hold the record of 66 seasons in the first division, have collected only two points from seven games this season. Hely took over in March last year and twice kept Sochaux in the top flight with modest resources.

Humphreys: Ritchie Humphreys, the player who made more than 500 appearances for Hartlepool, has been elected as the new chairman of the Professional Footballers’ Association. Humphreys, 35, who is now at Chesterfield, succeeds Clarke Carlisle, who has retired from professional football. Humphreys said: “I am honoured to have been elected by my fellow members and look forward to taking up the position of PFA chairman at the AGM in November.”

Heart Attack: Hungarian Ferencvaros’s Trinidad and Tobago national defender Akeem Adams is in a critical condition after a heart attack yesterday. Adams, 22, was taken to a Budapest hospital after he felt dizzy on Wednesday following Ferencvaros’s 3-1 win over Ujpest on Sunday. “Adams underwent surgeries...but unfortunately he is still in a serious condition,” the executive director of Ferencvaros Football Ltd Pal Orosz was quoted as saying.
