Higuain: Napoli striker Gonzalo Higuain had 10 stitches inserted in a facial injury following a boating accident yesterday, one day after his competitive debut for the club. The Argentine striker was reported to have slipped during an excursion to Capri and hit his face on the deck, injuring his jaw. He was treated in a hospital and discharged.

Australia: Australia became a full member of South East Asia’s ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) yesterday with the backing of all the members of the regional organ-isation. The decision was taken after a unanimous vote by the 11 member associations at an AFF Extraordinary Congress in Dili.

LEGA PRO: The start of the 2013-14 Lega Pro season has been postponed due to a player strike over the rights of older players. The regional third-tier divisions were scheduled to kick off from August 30 but a dispute over a move to impose a maximum mean age on matchday squads has forced a delay. The AIC is concerned players over the age of 30 could struggle to earn contracts under the newly enacted legislation as the Lega Pro seeks to promote the development of youth academies.

Sane: West Ham target Lamine Sane is happy to put his dream of playing in England on hold and stay with Bordeaux this season. The Senegal defender was linked with the Hammers this summer, but expects to see out the campaign in Ligue 1. “I think Bordeaux are asking too much, but if it doesn’t happen it’s because it’s not the time,” he said.

Foster: West Brom goalkeeper Ben Foster will miss the League One Cup clash against Newport today after suffering an ankle injury in Saturday’s Premier League draw at Everton. Third-choice keeper Luke Daniels is ready to step in.

Borisov: Former Prime Minister Boiko Borisov became the oldest footballer to appear for a Bulgarian professional club on Sunday when the 54-year-old played in his team Vitosha Bistritsa’s goalless draw against Rakovski in a second division match. At 54 years, two months and 12 days, Borisov had secured a place in the Bulgarian record books.
