Harford: Mick Harford’s proposed appointment as assistant to Newcastle director of football Joe Kinnear has fallen through. It emerged on Sunday that the 54-year-old former striker was in discussions with the club he briefly represented as a player over a role working alongside his former Wimbledon manager. However, reports said those talks have failed to reach a successful conclusion.
Sagbo: Hull boss Steve Bruce has confirmed the club have been in talks with Evian about signing striker Yannick Sagbo from the French side. The Tigers are reported to have bid £1.6m for the 25-year-old former Monaco frontman. Bruce said: “My chief executive is speaking with Evian and we’re hopeful that we can get something done because he would be a good addition.”
Ninis: Spain’s Real Sociedad are interested in signing Sotiris Ninis, the 23-year-old Parma winger. Reports said Real Sociedad have already tabled a €5m bid for the Greece international who only joined Parma last summer, making 14 Serie A appearances last season.
Gold Cup: Landon Donovan inspired another dominant United States performance on Sunday as the hosts routed El Salvador 5-1 to race into the semi-finals of the Gold Cup. The victory set up a meeting with Honduras, who edged Costa Rica 1-0. Mexico meet Panama in the other semi-final tomorrow.
Fred: Brazil striker Fred was one of two Fluminense players sent off as the Brazilian champions lost 3-1 to Vasco da Gama in the first domestic match to be played at Maracana since it was rebuilt for next year’s World Cup. Juninho Perna-mbucano scored Vasco’s first goal and set up another as the 38-year-old began a third stint at the club.
Brown: Scott Brown has been re-called to Gordon Strachan’s Scot-land squad for next month’s friendly against England at Wembley. Brown returns after he missed last month’s win over Croatia due to injury.
