Berg: Sweden striker Marcus Berg has signed a four-year contract with Panathinaikos. The 26-year-old former Hamburg player is part of the club’s plans to rebuild their squad after they finished sixth in the league last season and failed to qualify for European competition for the first time since 1997.

Ranger: Former Newcastle footballer Nile Ranger was charged with rape yesterday. The London-born 22-year-old will appear in court next month following an investigation by Northumbria Police. Ranger was released by Newcastle in March and is yet to be signed by a new club. He played a part in the Magpies winning the Championship in 2009-10.

Kone: Ivory Coast striker Arouna Kone has joined Everton on a three-year deal in a move re-uniting him with his former Wigan Athletic manager Roberto Martinez. The Premier League club said yesterday that Kone had joined for an undisclosed fee from relegated Wigan.

Seedorf: Clarence Seedorf grabbed a late winner as Botafogo moved top of the Campeonato Brasileiro with a 1-0 win over Fluminense on Sunday. The Dutchman slammed home a spectacular long-range effort with six minutes to go in a match played in Recife due to the unavailability of the Maracana.

Gold Cup: Mexico’s bid to capture a third straight CONCACAF Gold Cup got off to a shaky start when they fell to a surprise 2-1 defeat by Panama in Los Angeles on Sunday. ‘El Tri’ entered the tournament with a young, domestic-based team and their lack of experience showed as Gabriel Torres scored twice for Panama, who completed a day of upsets after Martinique’s shock 1-0 win over Canada.
