Di Canio: Paolo Di Canio has revealed he offered to quit at the height of the fascism row which followed his arrival at Sunderland. Di Canio met with club owner Ellis Short to discuss the matter. “I told him, ‘Tell me what I have to do. Bye bye. No problem, because I do not want to be a problem for the club’,” Di Canio told the Independent on Sunday.

Diego: Atletico Madrid are trying to find a way to bring Wolfsburg’s Brazilian playmaker Diego back to the club on loan for next season, president Enrique Cerezo said yesterday. “We are negotiating but we don’t have an economic agreement yet,” Cerezo said. The 28-year-old former Juventus and Werder Bremen midfielder spent the 2011-2012 season on loan at Atletico helping them to win the Europa League.

Ajax: Champions Ajax finished the season in style with goals from Kolbeinn Sigthorsson and Danny Hoesen giving them a 2-0 win at Groningen and a seven-point winning margin at the top of the Dutch league. Sigthorsson picked up a pass from Daley Blind after eight minutes to open the scoring as the Groningen defence failed to mark him and 18 minutes before time Hoesen outplayed an opponent outside the box and finished with a well-placed shot.

Brest relegated: Stade Brest were relegated from Ligue 1 yesterday when Evian Thonon Gaillard beat Nice 4-0 to move up to 17th and leave the bottom club eight points adrift of them with two games left. Brest, who have failed to earn a point since they sacked coach Landry Chauvin with eight matches to go, return to Ligue 2 after three seasons in the top flight.

In Hungary: Gyor ETO won their first Hungarian champion-ship in 30 years with a 1-0 victory over Ferencvaros yesterday as closest title rivals Videoton lost 2-1 at Debrecen. The club from Hungary’s sixth largest city have 58 points from 27 games with three remaining, giving them an unas-sailable 10-point advantage over second-placed Videoton. The title was the club’s fourth and their first since 1983 when they were known as Raba ETO.
