Jones: Manchester United’s Phil Jones will miss today’s Champions League last 16 second leg at home to Real Madrid after failing to recover from an ankle injury. The versatile defender suffered the injury during last month’s FA Cup fifth round victory over Reading.

Cubilla: Former Uruguay forward Luis Cubilla, who played in three World Cups for his country and as a coach won the Libertadores Cup twice with Paraguay’s Olimpia, has died at the age of 72. The Uruguayan football association confirmed that Cubilla, one of the country’s most successful and influential players, had died of stomach cancer in Asuncion where he lived.

AFC post: Bahrain’s Sheikh Salman bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa, part of the ruling family which is trying to contain continued violent unrest and political turmoil, is among the nominees to be the Asian Football Confederation president. The AFC said that Bahrain FA chief Al Khalifa is also in the running for an Asian seat on FIFA’s executive committee along with Hassan Al Thawadi, from 2022 World Cup hosts Qatar.

Cristante: Young Bryan Cristante has been offered a new contract by Milan which runs until June 2018. Milan said midfielder Cristante, who celebrated his 18th birthday last weekend, will be part of the first team squad next season.

Magee: Mike Magee bagged a hat-trick as champions LA Galaxy began their MLS season with a 4-0 win over Chicago Fire on Sunday. Magee scored after 38 minutes to put Galaxy in the lead, then added two more to seal his treble. Robbie Keane added a fourth on 80 minutes to complete the biggest win of the opening weekend.
