MEPPEN-WALTERS: Young Manchester City defender Courtney Meppen-Walters was jailed for 16 months yesterday for dangerous driving. The 18-year-old was found guilty at Manchester Crown Court of causing the deaths of a brother and sister last September through careless driving. Meppen-Walters was named on the substitutes’ bench for a Champions League match against Ajax Amsterdam this season but has never played for City’s first team.

KRUL: Newcastle goalkeeper Tim Krul will be out of action for up to five weeks, his manager Alan Pardew said yesterday. Netherlands international Krul, 24, suffered an ankle injury in last week’s Europa League match against Metalist Kharkiv and sat out Sunday’s Premier League win over South-ampton. “His ankle is still a little bit swollen,” Pardew said. “He will be out for a maximum four or five weeks but we are hoping for less.”

CORINTHIANS: Corinthians beat Colombian side Millonarios 2-0 in a Copa Libertadores match on Wednesday that was overshadowed by a ban on the home team’s fans that left the 38,000-seat Pacaembu stadium empty and eerily quiet. Conmebol had banned the Brazilian club’s fans after they let off a flare that killed a 14-year Bolivian supporter during last week’s game against San Jose in Bolivia.

ARSENAL: Arsenal defender Bacary Sagna will miss the north London derby against Tottenham on Sunday and midfielder Abou Diaby is rated a 50-50 chance. Abou has a calf problem, a minor one. He will have tests and then we will see if we can use him or not,” manager Arsene Wenger told a news conference yesterday. Sagna has a knee injury and missed last weekend’s win over Aston Villa.

FRIENDLY: Malta U-19 vs Hungary U-17 0-0.
