Szczesny: Goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny will miss Arsenal’s opening Champions League Group B tie at Montpellier today because of an ankle injury. The Polish international is to be replaced by Vito Mannone against the Ligue 1 champions.

Bayern Munich: Bayern Munich winger Arjen Robben is doubtful for their Champions League Group F encounter against Valencia tomorrow but team-mate Franck Ribery is set to play. Robben missed Bayern’s 3-1 win over Mainz on Saturday with a groin injury. Ribery was also ruled with a muscle injury but is confident about a return. “I think I will be able to play on Wednesday,” he said.

Ashworth: West Brom’s Dan Ashworth has been confirmed by the Football Association (FA) as their new director of elite development. Ashworth, 41, will stay with the Premier League club until next summer when he will take up his post at the FA’s new national football centre at St George’s Park.

Zenit SP: Zenit SP will be without several key players, including newly-signed midfielder Axel Witsel, for today’s Champions League clash at Malaga. Witsel has pulled a hamstring in training. Domenico Criscito, Sergei Semak and Danny will also miss the Group C opener.

Assou-Ekotto: Tottenham Hotspur left-back Benoit Assou-Ekotto is set to be sidelined for four weeks with a knee injury. The Cameroon defender has been a regular for Spurs during the last four seasons but missed Sunday’s 3-1 win away to Reading with a niggling injury and is now set for minor surgery.
