Scholl: Former German international Mehmet Scholl must choose between his job as coach of Bayern Munich’s reserves team and that as television pundit, according to Bayern Munich chairman Karl Heinz Rumme-nigge. “At one point, you have to choose your career: coach or pundit. The two don’t go together,” Rummenigge said. Scholl, 41, is a Bayern icon having made his debut for the Bavarians in 1992 and played 334 Bundesliga matches before retiring in 2007.

Friendlies: England will play friendly matches against Brazil and Ireland in 2013 as a way of launching the Football Asso-ciation’s 150th anniversary. Brazil will visit Wembley in February as part of a two-match arrangement that sees England heading to South America for a brief tour in June. Prior to the home game against Brazil, England will play Ireland, also at Wembley, for the first time since their infamous fixture in 1995 was abandoned after a riot by England fans at Lansdowne Road.

US win: Herculez Gomez scored a second-half free-kick as the USA got their 2014 World Cup qualifying campaign back on track with a 1-0 win over Jamaica. Gomez curled in a shot from just outside the penalty area in the 55th minute to avenge the defeat to Jamaica last week in front of a crowd of 23,881 at the Columbus Crew Stadium.

Matsui: Japan midfielder Daisuke Matsui has joined Bulgarian side Slavia Sofia. The 31-year-old, who helped Japan reach the last 16 of the 2010 World Cup, had signed a contract until June next year. Matsui made his name in France with Le Mans before spells with Saint-Etienne, Grenoble and Russia’s Tom Tomsk.

Reus: Borussia Dortmund for-ward Marco Reus is to undergo medical checks after picking up a foot injury in Germany’s 2-1 victory over Austria. Reus fired Germany into the lead but was injured in the process with the exact extent of his injury yet to be determined, Dortmund said.
