Pakistan Pele: Pakistan yesterday mourned the death of the country’s former football captain Abdul Ghafoor who was likened to Brazilian legend Pele because of their similar looks and style of play. Ghafoor died after a prolonged illness on Friday. He was 71. A midfielder of great talent, Ghafoor led Pakistan’s football team for four consecutive years in the 1960s when the country was among the best in Asia and claimed scalps including the UAE and China.

Germany: Midfielder Toni Kroos took part in yesterday’s training with the Germany team ahead of Tuesday’s 2014 World Cup qualifier away to Austria, while defender Marcel Schmelzer remains doubtful. Kroos sat out Friday’ 3-0 qualifier win over Faroe Islands in Hanover with a bruised hip, while left-back Schmelzer also missed the match after bruising his foot in the final training session on Thursday.

Jamaica: Jamaica shocked the United States 2-1 on Friday to seize the lead in their group in the semi-final round of 2014 World Cup qualifying in North and Central America and the Caribbean. CONCACAF goals from Rodolph Austin and Luton Shelton overcame Clint Dempsey’s first-minute strike for the Americans as Jamaica posted their first victory over the US in 19 matches. The goal for Dempsey — 36 seconds into the match — was the fastest for the United States in World Cup qualifying.

Piatti: Valencia are set to be without winger Pablo Piatti for the next two months after he broke his arm during training. Piatti suffered a double fracture in his right arm and was taken to the Centro de Rehabilitacion de Levante, where he was immediately operated on. The 23-year-old is now set to be out of action for up to 10 weeks.

Aganzo: Spanish striker David Aganzo has signed a one-year contract with Greek Super League club Aris, the Salonica club announced yesterday. No financial details of the contract were announced by the team. Aganzo, 31, will be available to play in Aris’ friendly at home with Benfica today.
