Rangers: Rangers returned to the venue of one of the biggest upsets in their history and failed to win again after a 1-1 draw with Berwick Rangers at modest Shielfield Park in the Scottish Third Division yesterday. In 1967 Berwick scored the most famous Scottish FA Cup upset when they beat Rangers 1-0 in the first round, an outcome the then-Rangers captain John Greig described as “probably the worst defeat in the club’s history”.
Tufegdzic: Goran Tufegdzic, Kuwait’s national squad coach, is in critical condition after being shot at in a dispute with his neighbour in eastern Serbia. Tufegdzic, a 41-year old Serbian citizen spending holidays in his hometown of Pozarevac, was shot in the throat. He underwent surgery but has still remained in a critical condition. His attacker, an 86-year-old neighbour, was arrested.
Poulsen: Simon Poulsen has joined Sampdoria from AZ Alkmaar. The Serie A club said a deal had been signed with the 27-year-old who is out of contract. The Denmark wing-back will have a medical today before the transfer is confirmed.
Tweet trouble: A man has been arrested in connection with racist Twitter messages sent to West Ham United footballer Carlton Cole, Essex Police confirmed yesterday. The 22-year-old man from Southend, Essex, wrote two posts on Saturday following West Ham’s 3-0 Premier League defeat at Swansea City. The tweets questioned Cole’s performance and used a racist term to describe him.
Popov: Bulgaria striker Ivelin Popov has joined Russian Premier League club Kuban Krasnodar from Turkish side Gaziantepspor on a three-year contract. Popov, 24, had agreed terms to join Blackburn Rovers from Litex Lovech after completing a medical in August 2010 but the Home Office refused him a permit because he had not played in enough internationals.
