Knobel: Former Netherlands coach George Knobel, who took the side to third place in the 1976 European Championship, died on Saturday aged 89, one of his former clubs Ajax said in a statement. Although he was not at Ajax for long, Knobel oversaw a 6-1 aggregate victory over Milan in the European Supercup in 1973 when Ajax overturned a 1-0 defeat in the first leg to beat Milan 6-0 at home.

In Poland: Slask Wroclaw yesterday won one of the tightest title races in recent Polish football history, bringing the trophy to their southwestern city for the first time since their debut title in 1977. Slask wrapped up their impressive run in Poland’s 16-club Ekstraklasa with a 1-0 win away to last season’s champions Wisla Krakow. Slask notched up 56 points, just one ahead of runners-up Ruch Chorzow.

Anderlecht: Anderlecht won the Belgian league title for the 31st time yesterday after a 1-1 home draw against nearest challengers FC Bruges. The Brussels side have 49 points with two games to go and are seven points ahead of Bruges.

S. Donetsk: Ukraine champions Shakhtar Donetsk won their eighth national cup when they beat city rivals Metalurg 2-1 after extra-time yesterday. Brazilian midfielder Alex Teixeira put Shakhtar ahead in the 23rd minute. Metalurg’s Nikolai Morozyuk levelled in the 69th minute but Shakhtar defender Alexander Kucher scored the winner in the 104th minute.
