Rooney: The father of England and Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has been told he will face no further action in a police probe into a football betting scam. Wayne Rooney senior was detained at his home in Liverpool, northwest England, in October in connection with suspicious betting activity surrounding a Scottish Premier League match.

Sion: Frenchman Laurent Roussey yesterday announced his resignation as coach of Swiss outfit FC Sion following some virulent criticism of his efforts by chairman Christian Constantin. Roussey, who only took over from Bernard Challandes 14 months ago, stepped down a day after a 3-0 loss to Basel.

Lamela: Roma midfielder Erik Lamela has been handed a three-match ban for spitting at Juventus defender Stephan Lichtsteiner during Sunday’s Serie A clash in Turin. Argentine youngster Lamela spat at Lichtsteiner after the Swiss international had taunted him towards the end of a game that Roma lost 4-0.

Blades probe: Sheffield United said they had launched an investigation into Twitter comments made by player Connor Brown following Ched Evans’s conviction for rape. As well as tweeting his support for Evans, Brown called his victim “a money-grabbing little tramp” and launched what the Star newspaper said was an “extraordinary swear-word filled rant” at the woman.
