Euro 2020: Turkey yesterday lodged an official bid with UEFA to host the 2020 European championships. In March, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan urged UEFA to award his country the right to host Euro 2020, citing improvements in infrastructure as well as Turkey’s love of football and its sizeable young population.

Reading: Reading returned to the Premier League after securing automatic promotion with a 1-0 win at home to Nottingham Forest last night. Mikele Leigertwood’s goal nine minutes from time was the only goal of the game at the Madejski Stadium. But that was enough to take the Royals back to the top flight for the first time since 2008, with the players swamped by Reading fans at the final whistle.

Trial: The trial of 75 people in connection with football riots in the northern city of Port Said in February that left more than 70 people dead started yesterday. Nine policemen are among the defendants in the trial, which is being held in Cairo for security reasons.

Zilina: Dutchman Frans Adelaar has been named manager of Slovak league leaders MSK Zilina. The 51-year old Adelaar replaces Slovak Lubos Nosicky, who was sacked after a slide in form.

Pazzini: Reports in Italy are saying that Lazio will be making an offer for Giampaolo Pazzini, the out-of-favour Inter striker. Lazio could ask Inter to include the permanent transfer of Mauro Zarate, currently on loan at Inter, in the deal.
