Rooney: Wayne Rooney is expected to be fit for Manchester United’s Champions League encounter with Benfica at Old Trafford today. Rooney missed training this morning after getting a buffeting during Saturday’s win at Swansea but Sir Alex Ferguson feels his star striker will recover. Jonny Evans (hamstring) is also expected to be available but skipper Nemanja Vidic is missing as he serves the final game of a two-match ban.

Maradona: Argentinian football legend Diego Maradona attended the funeral of his mother at a private ceremony in Bella Vista, north-west of the capital Buenos Aires yesterday. Maradona, 51, left the United Arab Emirates, where he is the coach of Al-Wasl, on Sunday to be at his ill mother’s bedside, but was informed that she had died while en route. Around 20 people attended the burial at a private cemetery 30 kilometres from Buenos Aires.

Iniesta out: Barcelona midfielder Andres Iniesta will miss the European champions’ trip to face Milan in the Champions League tomorrow with a thigh injury. The midfielder will not travel to Italy as “a precaution”, and joins the suspended Dani Alves and injured duo Adriano and Ibrahim Afellay.

Appeal: Inverness have confirmed they will appeal against the red card issued to Greg Tansey during Saturday’s Premier League game against Celtic. The midfielder was dismissed in the 36th minute by referee Stevie O’Reilly following an aerial challenge with Hoops striker Georgios Samaras.

Beye: Veteran Senegalese international defender Habib Beye signed for Championship strugglers Doncaster Rovers from English Premier League side Aston Villa yesterday on a two-month loan. The 34-year-old former Senegalese captain has played just seven times for Villa since moving there in 2009.

LuaLua: Kazenga LuaLua has joined Brighton on a permanent basis from Newcastle, having been on loan with the Championship side for the first part of the season. The 20-year-old winger has signed a three-year contract with the Seagulls and joins them for an undisclosed fee.

Pulis: Stoke manager Tony Pulis is considering an appeal against his £10,000 fine imposed for comments made about referee Lee Probert last month. The Potters boss was charged with improper conduct by the Football Association following his criticism of the official after the 2-1 League Cup exit at home to Liverpool a month ago.
