Is sport given sufficient importance in Malta?

Malta has one of the highest levels of obesity in the EU. This clearly shows that sport is not given enough importance in our society. Even though there is a lot of awareness that sport is good for one’s health, especially at a young age, the Maltese are still a bit lazy when it comes down to actually practising a sport. I think this is because there is a lack of incentive. Jessica Agius, 20, Mcast Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) in Electronics Engineering.

I would say sport is given less importance in Malta than in other countries. Besides, certain types of sport are given more importance than others. Lots of energy and resources are dedicated to football, for example, but not to others which may also be popular. Darren Dalli, 19, Mcast-Btec Higher National Diploma in Electronic Engineering.

There definitely are some people who do take sport seriously enough to keep themselves active throughout their lives. Mark Camilleri, 23, Bachelor of Science in the Built Environment.

What effects would sport have on children?

Practising a sport should start at an early age because it would be easier to adapt to that healthy lifestyle in the long run. It would also promote discipline and responsibility because it helps children realise that in order to succeed they have to work hard – they can’t excel without lots of practice and preparation. In team sports, children learn to work together, which means they have to deal with disagreements and make compromises within the team in order to win. Jessica Agius

Children would grow healthier and would have less chance of developing bad habits like smoking and drinking if they are accustomed to practising a sport from an early age. Sport is also a form of relaxation and helps people to socialise and make new friends. Darren Dalli

Sport definitely increases a child’s stamina and may help with teamwork. It also teaches people how to win and lose while providing a way to relax. Above all, it is a means to fitness. Mark Camilleri

What is the most popular sport in Malta?

I think the most popular sport in Malta is football, although rugby is also quite popular. Jessica Agius

The most popular sport in Malta is definitely football. Darren Dalli

I would say football, without a shadow of doubt. Mark Camilleri
