The Netherlands claimed top spot in Group A after beating fellow semi-finalists England 2-0 at the Hibs Stadium yesterday.

England’s defeat means that they will face Group B winners Portugal in Sunday’s semi-finals.

After a goalless first half, the game came to life when Calvin Verdonk put the Netherlands ahead with a spectacular drive from 30 metres out.

Dani van der Moot’s header, less than a minute after he came on, sealed the three points for the Dutch who have a perfect record of three wins in as many games.

In Group B, Portugal completed their qualifying phase of the final with maximum spoils after beating Germany 1-0 at the National Stadium.

Pedro Rodrigues scored the goal that mattered from a free-kick in the second half as Portugal continue to make inroads in the tournament while Germany return home without a win from three matches.

In the other match, Scotland staged a remarkable second-half comeback to beat Switzerland 3-1 and book a place in the last four.

Dimitri Oberlin put Switzerland ahead midway through the first half but Scot Gemmill’s young Scots battled back bravely after the break.

Substitutes Craig Wighton and Ryan Hardie were both on the mark either side of Jake Sheppard’s goal as Switzerland had a late penalty, taken by Boris Babic, stopped by goalkeeper Robby McCrorie.
