Euro Media Forum, the US Embassy in Malta and Eden Cinemas are presenting a special screening of The Monuments Men tomorrow at 6pm at the Eden Cinemas, to be followed by a discussion.

The American-German war production, directed by George Clooney, is based on Robert M. Edsel’s 2009 book The Monuments Men: Allied Heroes, Nazi Thieves and the Greatest Treasure Hunt in History. It tells the true story of an army unit, nicknamed the Monuments Men, that was tasked with finding and saving artworks and culturally important items before losing them to Hitler during World War II.

Moderator Fleur Vella, US Embassy speakers Nathan Austin and Lieutenant Commander Karsten Spies will give an insight on the people who saved items of European cultural heritage during this war period, their legacy and also delve into Hitler’s rationale for appropriating art from Nazi-controlled areas.

The speakers will explore lessons learnt from The Monuments Men in the context of modern conflicts like that in Syria, which threaten the world’s cultural heritage. The audience is invited to participate in the discussion and ask questions.

For bookings, contact Eden Cinemas on 2371 0400 or visit www.edencinemas.com.mt.

The US Embassy in Malta, the Malta Film Network and the Good Causes Fund are supporting this event.
