A quote by Daniel Defoe runs:
“Wherever God erects a House of Prayer
The Devil always builds a chapel there
And ‘twill be found upon examination
The latter has the larger congregation.”
Why are the followers of the devil more numerous than those of God? We may find an answer in the dogmatic constitution on the Church Lumen Gentium, par.16, echoing St Paul: “But often people, deceived by the Evil One, have become vain in their reasoning and have exchanged the truth of God for a lie, serving the creature rather than the Creator.”
Sound reasoning, strengthened by grace, overcomes the deceit of the Evil One and brings about a radical change in behaviour by substituting the truth of God for the lie, thus serving the Creator rather than the creature.
