Justin Caruana Scicluna has been crowned Tenovar Masters champion for 2012.

The tournament was played over three days at the Eden Superbowl and Caruana Scicluna claimed his title after beating Sue Abela, his mother, in the final.

The top six from the qualifying session joined the MTBA’s six seeds in the second stage, comprising a further six games, to determine the top eight for the final stages.

Those qualifying (in order of qualification) were: Mauro Anastasi, Ray Falzon Reale, Sue Abela, Mark Spiteri, Rankin Camilleri, Dennis Mercieca, Justin Caruana Scicluna and Neil Sullivan.

Those present for the final day of the tournament were treated to a spectacular level of bowling as Spiteri led with a 219.7 game average for a total of 1,538.

His tally was bolstered to 1,648 by several bonuses awarded for game wins, draws and high games.

Spiteri qualified for the semi-finals ahead of Falzon Reale, Caruana Scicluna and Abela.

The semi-finals were played over two games.

After his early consistency, Spiteri could not get back ‘into the zone’ and found himself 32 pins down on Abela after game one.

He regained composure in the second game, rolling a solid 244 to Abela’s 219... a better effort but still not enough to close the gap. Abela won the encounter 422-415.

In the other semi, Falzon Reale pipped Caruana Scicluna in game one 225-212 but the tables were turned in game two which saw the latter bang in eight strikes for a 228-191 score and a 440-416 win.

Abela went into the best-of-three final with a 3-0 record in previous head-to-head encounters.

She took the early advantage (181-176) but Caruana Scicluna edged the second game (218-177) to go level, necessitating the deciding third game.

The youngster’s fightback buoyed him against his illustrious opponent and he kept his cool to give one last tournament-winning performance, clinching it 172-167 for the match and the coveted Tenovar Masters title.
