It seems that Transport Malta is making it very difficult for foreigners to obtain a driving licence in Malta.

It usually takes months to process a learner’s permit for some driving lessons.

It seems there is a European law that does not allow nationals from other EU countries to obtain a driving licence before having resided in the country for at least 185 days. But Transport Malta is not even allowing foreigners get driving lessons during that period.

Foreigners are also asked to prove to Transport Malta that they have been residing in the country for more than 185 days by handing in private documents such as old pay slips or a rental contract.

Other EU countries don’t present all these obstacles and usually rely on the person’s statement.

And to think that I thought a new government would have made the difference. It seems that Transport Malta will never change, no matter who is in government.
