A Somali man who allegedly stabbed a fellow countryman was yesterday remanded in custody after pleading not guilty.

Abdulnasir Mohammed Abdullahi, 23, and Mohammed Haji Abdilwahid Nur, 25, were involved in an argument while in a public garden behind the Marsa police station at about 6 p.m. on Friday.

Mr Abdilwahid sustained serious stab wounds and was taken to Mater Dei Hospital in a critical condition.

The Marsa police were informed that there was an injured man close to the station and, on taking a look outside, an officer found the man dragging himself towards the station, sources said.

Mr Abdullahi, who appeared before Magistrate Miriam Hayman, pleaded not guilty to trying to kill Mr Abdilwahid, seriously injuring him, being in illegal possession of a knife and breaching the peace.

Legal aid lawyer Cedric Mifsud did not request bail.

Police inspectors Kevin Farrugia and Carlos Cordina prosecuted.
