A Somali migrant who arrived on a dinghy last week died at Ħal Far detention centre yesterday.

The man had been in a group rescued 75 miles south of Malta by the Armed Forces.

Sources said he fell ill suddenly at about 2.30 p.m. and was taken to the Floriana health centre where a doctor diagnosed gastroenteritis and diarrhoea. He was prescribed medicines and taken back to the detention centre.

On his return to the detention centre he lost consciousness.

Later, a nurse who was on site found no pulse and he was declared dead soon afterwards.

Magistrate Franco Depasquale is holding an inquiry, assisted by court expert Mario Scerri.
