It is good to know that the government claims to be working on a solution to the Simblija issue (August 6). What is less reassuring and acceptable is that this endless saga has been allowed to drag on for 10 years.

According to a parliamentary reply that I was given on February 20, this concerns a project where restoration and rehabilitation works had run up to €20,000. of which €5,000 came from European Union funds.

The Ramblers’ Association deserves praise for having highlighted this issue but what I have found baffling was that whenever I raised the issue in Parliament I was often asked to refer the matter first to one minister, then to another.

My PQ 31303, addressed to the Minister of Tourism and the Environment, was routed to the Minister of Resources (February 6, 2012) while PQ 26666, addressed to the Minister of Resources, was re-routed to the Minister of Land (July 11, 2011).

The bottom line is that we are talking about a government property registered with the Land Department as tenement 50940.

Last January, Parliament was promised that this land, which is subject to an agricultural rent that is not being accepted by the authorities, was meant to be transferred to the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage.

The government just stopped short of committing itself as to when this would be done. We await a solution without further delay.
