Solar-powered bins that send text messages and e-mails when they need emptying have been installed in a seaside town.

Ten of the Big Belly bins, which can store and compact rubbish at the same time, have been placed at Boscombe Precinct in Dorset, the UK.

The bins are able to hold up to 800 litres of rubbish – eight times more than a standard model.

Sensors fitted in the bins are able to detect when they are full, and a text message or e-mail is then sent to Bournemouth Borough Council.

Councillor Jane Kelly said: “The new solar-powered bins will be a welcome addition to the area. Not only do they look great, they also hold more, meaning fewer refuse collections are required.”
