The Housing Authority has received 36 proposals from the private sector for the provision of about 1,000 potential homes that could be used to cut the waiting list for people who need social housing.

On her last day as Social Policy Minister, President-elect Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca said there was a waiting list of 3,300. The authority also plans a policy to subsidise renters and help make their income last to the end of the month.

In another scheme, people who rent out property under the old rent laws will be able to make use of funds to carry out repairs, as many landowners refuse to do so leaving the tenants in condemned buildings.
