I concur 100 per cent with Alfred Gauci (February 23) about political mass meetings being held in locations that inconvenience and disturb residents and commuters. In fact, I don’t know of anywhere else in the civilised world where they do.
Who pays for these events?
These meetings are of no benefit at all to the parties concerned. They are simply preaching to the converted and, in the process, upsetting and alienating residents and commerce alike.
I was visiting Malta two weekends ago with my family and we steered clear of Valletta, as most tourists would also have done.
Have these narrow-minded people ever heard of television? If, like in other democratic progressive countries, there was a five- or 10-minute slot allotted before, say, the 6pm news on TV, then people of various political beliefs might actually watch and listen and they would draw in a larger ‘crowd’ and, who knows, even increase their membership.
Of course, this will not happen. It’s beyond belief that people attend these gatherings and stand there being patronised.
