Enemalta is being criticised about its well-being left, right and centre for various reasons. One of its main problems is cash flow but there is a solution that could benefit both the company and consumers alike.

The first step is to invest in a smart card attachment to the smart meter where customers can buy units online or at any outlet participating, including banks, post offices, supermarkets, etc. This way, consumers will be more aware about their consumption and would be more vigilant to ensure there is no waste of units. This system will definitely improve Enemalta’s cash flow even before the utility service is provided.

The next step is to provide a banking service for customers who fall behind on their bills to start paying a “reasonable” monthly amount while at the same time utilise the smart card prepaid system to avoid running up another bill and suffer disconnection. It is a win-win solution; even the MRA would give me a medal for this solution.

Everything else, right from buying oil on the international market to ensuring proper maintenance, is a political matter. But, then, that is a different ball game.
