The Civil Protection Department is encouraging the public to head to Shipwrights Wharf in Marsa today to donate food and water to help ease the growing humanitarian crisis in Tripoli, after a slow turnout yesterday.

The CPD started receiving donations for Libya, as preparations accelerated for Malta to serve as a logistical base for humanitarian aid to Tripoli.

Still, CPD director Patrick Murgo said he was pleased the people who did turn up had heeded calls to donate bottled water and tinned foods. He urged people to avoid donating clothes because they were not a priority.

“The Libyan population is suffering greatly as provisions have decreased drastically because of the conflict. Being so close to Libya we should give what we can,” he said.

The CPD is collaborating with other organisations, including the World Food Programme and the Malta-based I Go-Aid Foundation, which plans to send more personnel and supplies to Tripoli in the coming days.

Mr Murgo expects the provisions collected this weekend to be sent to Tripoli in the coming week.

Money can also be donated to the following accounts: HSBC 0780 0239 1050; Bank of Valletta 4001 8758 443; Lombard Bank 0144 0800 001; APS Bank 2000 0889 551 and Banif Bank 0008 3224 181.

The CPD warehouse will be open today between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.
