I would like to congratulatethe mayor of Sliema for leading the way by placing cycling-friendly signs along the Sliemapromenade.

This sensible initiative benefits the less confident and younger cyclists who might be afraid to use a bicycle along Tower Road, which at times can be quite dangerous due to speeding traffic. However, more experienced, faster cyclists who know how to cope with traffic and vehicle drivers will still be able to use the public road.

In a win-win situation, slower cyclists won’t hold up trafficand faster cyclists won’t endanger pedestrians along the Strand, while car drivers themselvesbenefit from shorter traffic queues and – importantly for Sliema residents – far moreparking spaces.

I do hope this initiative will encourage parents to teach their children to ride bicycles, becoming responsible road users and transport independent (for short trips) in the process. Perhaps other mayors and councils could trysimilar bicycle-friendly initiatives.

Once again, well done to the Sliema mayor and local council.
