I refer to the opinion piece penned by Arnold Cassola entitled ‘A country of desperate groups’ (March 16) and his opening sentence: “The rape of Sliema started in the 1960s with the building of the Preluna Hotel.”

I understand that rape in this case would be the demolition of houses to be replaced by apartment blocks.

I, therefore, stand to correct Cassola in that the Preluna Hotel was constructed on the site of a house lying in ruins flanked by three apartment blocks and a hotel.

Not to mention that this hotel quickly became a pioneer and a pillar of the tourism industry, then still in its infancy.
