Bayern Munich eased past Roma 2-0 with goals from Franck Ribery and Mario Goetze yesterday to advance to the Champions League knockout stage as Group E winners with two games to spare.

Edinson Cavani’s early goal helped Paris St Germain secure their place in the last 16 after a 1-0 home win over APOEL.

Barcelona are also through from Group F and a second-half Jackson Martinez strike set Porto on their way to a 2-0 victory over Athletic Bilbao to make sure of a place in the next round.

Frenchman Ribery slotted in seven minutes before the break and Goetze volleyed in midway through the second half as impressive Bayern notched their fourth win in four matches.

Undefeated in the Champions League, Bundesliga and German Cup this season, Bayern also secured top spot with two games left to play.

Roma, desperate to avoid a repeat of their 7-1 home demolition by Bayern this month, kept pace for almost the entire first half but were eventually outclassed and stayed in second place on four points.

With in-form winger Arjen Robben ruled out of the game due to a stomach bug, coach Pep Guardiola opted to leave Thomas Mueller on the bench and named Ribery for only his second start of the season.

The Italians, with Francesco Totti on the bench, were disciplined at the back, working extremely hard to keep the Germans well away from their box.

Bayern’s Juan Bernat went close in the 17th minute but his shot was cleared at the last instance by Vassilis Torosidis and Philipp Lahm’s shot was easily blocked by Lukasz Skorupski.

Roma’s best chance fell to Radja Nainggolan who broke clear but scuppered his chance with a bad first touch.

But it all changed when Ribery beautifully turned in David Alaba’s cutback in the 38th.

With Roma forced to come forward Bayern found space much more easily and came close with Alaba and Medhi Benatia early in the second half.

Goetze was left unmarked and killed off the game with an awkward volley in the 64th minute as Bayern extended their unbeaten run to 16 matches in all competitions.

City crash at home

Manchester City’s hopes of qualifying from Group E were dealt a blow after Seydou Doumbia’s brace and two red cards subjected them to a humiliating 2-1 defeat by CSKA at the Etihad Stadium.

Doumbia twice capitalised on woeful defending to score, the first inside two minutes, either side of a sweet strike by Yaya Toure who was later sent off.

Half-time substitute Fernandinho was sent off midway through the second half before Toure followed after lashing out at a CSKA player to complete a dreadful night for City who have taken two points from four games.

Cavani found the back of the net in the first minute to hand PSG their second win in as many matches against APOEL.

PSG now lead Group F with 10 points from four games ahead of Barcelona, who trail the French champions by one point.

Lionel Messi scored twice to equal Raul’s Champions League scoring record as Barca secured their spot in the knockout stages by beating 10-man Ajax 2-0 away.

Argentina forward Messi struck in each half and Joel Veltman’s 71st-minute red card completed a disappointing evening for the hosts.

Messi matched Raul’s record tally of 71 goals thanks to a 36th-minute header and a 76th-minute tap-in, beating Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo to match Raul’s mark.

Chelsea, meanwhile, must wait to secure qualification after Eden Hazard missed a late penalty in a 1-1 draw against Maribor.

The Slovenians were unrecognisable from the side beaten 6-0 by Chelsea two weeks ago and claimed a deserved lead when Agim Ibraimi curled in a beautiful shot into the top corner five minutes into the second half.

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho had already reacted to a poor first-half showing by making a double substitution at half-time, introducing striker Diego Costa and Oscar.

Luka Zahovic missed a fine chance to double the advantage and enhance Maribor’s claims of inflicting Chelsea’s first defeat of the season, before Nemanja Matic’s close-range effort 17 minutes from time which saved the Blues’ blushes.

Hazard was then fouled for an 86th minute spot-kick, but his effort was too central and keeper Jasmin Handanovic saved.
