Bright prospect Adam Vella has just won a silver medal at the Coppa Italia which also incorporated the Gran Prix Sicilia.

After winning three straight bouts in the 60kg category all on the same day, he qualified for the final against Italian champion Salvatore Manino.

In the decisive bout, Vella looked rather tired following his previous day’s travails and in the end he had to settle for second place.

More was expected from David Zammit in the 66kg class, though.

In his opening bout, he looked set to win comfortably but instead of defending his lead, an over-confident Zammit committed a technical mistake that cost him the bout and elimination.

A new face on the international scene representing the country was Mark Galea in the Cadet 63kg category.

He figured in three bouts and managed to win one.

In the end, Malta was classified 12th out of 26 teams.

The Maltese contingent also consisted of Jesmond Giordimaina, the national coach, and his assistant Abraham Vassallo.
