Trade union grouping Forum has welcomed a proposal to allow workers to take sick leave if their children are ill.

Criticising the employers’ association that described the proposal as “a crazy idea”, Forum said the excuse of abuse of sick leave was “nonsensical”.

“At the very least, a capping system can be introduced whereby a specific number of days can be utilised in respect of sick children,” Forum said, adding certificates could still be issued for children and presented to employers.

Forum said the consensus that existed to encourage more women and carers of children to participate in the labour market had to translate itself into more tangible matters.

“It is high time that carers of young children are not only encouraged but enabled to participate in the labour market,” Forum said.

The government is currently exploring the best way to introduce the measure.
