Four Maltese triathletes achieved commendable results when taking part in a standard distance triathlon in Sicily on Sunday.

David Galea, Jude Zammit, Gaetano Catania (all Agones SFC) and Graham Borg (Athleta Pembroke) competed in the Vulcano Olympic Triathlon, the regional championship race organised by FITRI (Federazione Italiana Triathlon).

As expected, the first of the Maltese quartet out of the water was Borg. He covered the 1.5km swim segment in 25 minutes. He led the pack in the draft legal bike segment before finishing the race in 2:15.48 for third place in his category.

Galea has enjoyed an extraordinary season with an age-group win in a middle-distance triathlon in Trapani in April. More recently, he placed second in his category in a long-distance triathlon in Henley on Thames.

In Sicily, Galea wrapped up his race with an excellent run, beating the Sicilian regional champion in his category by placing eighth overall and first in his category in 2:09:59.

Zammit and Catania, both competing in the same category, also recorded very good results, placing first and third respectively in their class.

Zammit produced a strong run to recover positions and finish in 2:15:40. Catania’s accumulated time was 2:21:46.

Attention will now shift to the BBB-Buff Malta National Triathlon Championships taking place on the Salina Coast Road this Sunday.

The road from the Telgħa t’Alla u Ommu junction to the entrance of Magħtab will be closed for traffic between 7.45am and 10.45am to ensure athletes’ safety.
