Siġġiewi’s main square will be transformed into a farm this weekend with fruit, vegetables and old farming methods and machinery.

The village, surrounded by so many fields, counting quite a few farmers among its population and where many still practise agriculture as part-timers or as a hobby, will offer visitors the chance to sample the bounty of produce and also see how agriculture has changed over the past 50 years, a spokesman for the promoters said.

The main attraction will be the threshing floor. In some villages, this method survived until about 30 years ago but machinery has now killed the practice.

Farm animals will be brought along and visitors will be able to feed them and even take a ride on donkeys, once a common scene along the streets of Siġġiewi.

Another attraction will be the roasting and grinding of coffee beans.

The activity, organised by the local council in conjunction with an ad hoc committee, will highlight the importance of traditional skills, particularly those employed in the production of honey and olive oil.

There will be folklore singing and a re-enactment of a traditional Maltese wedding on Saturday evening when the Siġġiewi Festival Brass Band and the Guggen Band will be in attendance.

Proceeds will be in aid of Id-Dar tal-Providenza.
