Today’s brides are definitely less traditional, according to wedding planner Bernice Bugeja. Some would still prefer the classic, big, fairy-tale wedding, but even these are trying to incorporate innovative ideas.

“Then there are those who opt for a completely different wedding. Unusual venues like boats, beaches and historical areas are becoming increasingly popular with brides who want to offer an out-of-the-ordinary experience to their guests,” Ms Bugeja points out.

“These weddings are usually themed and that particular theme is carried throughout from the selection of the venue and caterer down to the bride’s shoes!”

Brides tend to be nervous and stressed clients in general, so the qualities a wedding planner should possess to deal with them include being organised and having excellent time-management and multi-tasking skills, according to Ms Bugeja.

Wedding planners must also possess excellent interpersonal skills that aid them when interacting with all parties involved. They should be friendly, outgoing and willing to work under pressure.

“Weddings tend to bring out the best and the worst in people, and a wedding planner needs to calm stressed-out brides, reassure jittery grooms and placate emotional parents.

“They also need to be flexible and analytical thinkers as they must react quickly and solve any mishaps along the way,” Ms Bugeja maintains.

The main aim of a wedding planner is to make couples’ dreams come true. Many times, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime event and everything must be perfect.

“I would have to guide and work together with the couple to achieve this. I am a ‘yes’ person, so if the request can be done operationally, I would definitely take up the challenge.

“However, I would never agree to anything I know for a fact wouldn’t work. In that case, I would suggest an alternative solution that would suit best what the couple had in mind,” Ms Bugeja adds.

Ultimately, what makes the big day special is “planning a wedding that shows off your personality”.

To see to their needs under one roof, brides-to-be can visit the Weddings Showcase at Paradise Bay Hotel tomorrow from 4 to 11pm, where they will find different wedding set-ups and 15 suppliers in attendance, ranging from wedding invitations to bridal gowns and venue decorations.
